Archive for July, 2011

We have a few changes in the month of August as far as meetings are concerned. The monthly workshop is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 9th August which is a public holiday, as some members have already pointed out.

“National Women’s Day is an annual public holiday in South Africa on August 9, which commemorates the national march of women on this day in 1956 to petition against legislation that required African persons to carry the “pass”, special identification documents which curtailed an African’s freedom of movement during the apartheid era.”

So with the idea of marching fresh in your mind, we are holding a photo walk instead of a workshop. To get you in the mood, ‘cos its going to be fun, here is Nancy Sinatra and ladies’ vintage instructional advice on how to march! You should however not wear boots on our photo walk, sensible flats shoes would be a better choice.

On Tuesday 9th August, we will meet at 07H00 at the Moyo pier, uShaka Marine world.

The walk starts at 07H30 and will follow a route through the streets past Addington hospital, down to Mahatma Gandhi Drive, towards the Ski boat club at Vetch’s and finally through the derelict buildings and new developments back to the Moyo pier. For those who couldn’t participate in the Scott Kelby 3rd Annual Worldwide Photo Walk last year, we’ll be following the same route.

On the morning of the photo walk, you will be given a list of subjects which you need to photograph on the walk. So it becomes more than just a photo walk, but a mini circuit too. The committee has been sworn to secrecy about the list of subjects, so don’t try and weasel any information out of us – we will not divulge anything.

The photo walk is expected to take 2.5 hours and we will meet for coffee around 10H00 at Java Cafe located inside the mall walk at uShaka (or breakfast for those famished members in need of sustenance).

Only photos taken on the day will be allowed for submission. The details for submission, judging and presentation will follow shortly. Don’t bother peeking at the special photo walk upload page yet, I am not going to give away the list of subjects that easily ;-)

As always, the participation in the walk is only open to paid-up members of the WCC.

As we will be on foot in the streets and amongst the buildings in the Point area, we are to keep together in small groups and be aware of where your colleagues, friends and family are at all times. No wandering off on your own. Keep your gear down to the minimum required for the day – If you want to lug something along, then you need to be prepared to carry it the whole way as I know Ben is not going carry it for you. Don’t bring your entire lens collection with you.

The regulations we have stipulated for all our outings apply.

Should it be raining on the day of the photo walk, then the walk will be postponed until another date.

See you on Tuesday 9th August at 07H00.

Ian sent me a really interesting link this evening. The Discover Wildlife website has the tag-line “Wildlife and photography at its best with BBC Wildlife magazine”. Stunning photography along with hints and tips for the avid wildlife photographer. The “Masterclass” link under the “Photography” menu on the main page has numerous articles which are well worth reading. Thanks Ian.

Crash Taylor

Some inspiration for the week… Crash Taylor, an exclusive wedding photographer from the UK, runs a couple of inspiring websites.

On the first one: “Interviews By Crash Taylor“, he does in depth interviews of fellow photographers he admires. He doesn’t only take you into the heads of some really amazing photographers, but there is normally lots of images that come along with the interviews… Definitely one to bookmark…

On the second site: “The Still Image By Crash Taylor“, he also interviews fellow photographers but this time it revolves around one or two specific images and the techniques in getting those images.

Strobist – BC3

I’m sure we all know about “Strobist” by now. If you don’t- its one of the best resources on ‘off camera’ flash on the web. When Strobist started, David Hobby, challenged his readers with a series of tasks called “Boot Camp”. At the moment Boot Camp 3 is on the go. The second assignment is currently out and I can tell you it doesn’t look easy. If you up for a challenge then you can check it out here..

Hi there,

Apologies for the late notification – Jeffrey and Kierran confirmed today that the club outing will take place this Sunday 17th July to the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve. Outing is open to paid-up members of the WCC.

Gates open at 07:00, meet 07:00 for 07:30. Late arrivals, to catch up to the group.

Located on the north bank of the Umgeni River (Durban North) is the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve. It is, at its name suggest, renowned for its large numbers of mangrove trees. This 76 hectare reserve has the largest population of mangrove trees in the Durban area, and is also used as Nature Conservation Centre.

Expect to see great quantities of black, red and white mangrove swamp, not to mention real sea snails, whilst creeping plants and pioneer scrub habitats the shoreline. Take the tree available reserve trails that will either take you to swamp or bird hide. Yes, and watch out for the diversity of birdlife that subsists in the area, includes the rare Mangrove Kingfisher and the rare Natal Nightjar. Entry to the Reserve is free of charge, but visits are only on Saturdays and Sundays, so scrap your weekend itinerary, and see some indigenous mangrove trees for yourself.

Directions:

Travel to Pick ‘n Pay Hyper “by the sea”

1. Merge onto M4 going North
2. Travel 1,3 km
3. Take exit 4 for Broadway, turn right, cross over M4
4. Turn right onto Fairway (not M4 back to Durban)
5. Travel 1,2 – 1,8 km South (back towards Durban)

Reminder: Image upload cut-off at midnight on Monday 18th July.

Hi guys, sorry about the long break in posts. I have been away on holiday for the last couple of weeks and was pretty much out of touch with computers…

Outing

First of all, thanks to all the guys that organised and helped with the outing Tuesday night. I couldn’t believe how well attended it was and how enthusiastic everyone was to get shooting. I think we all learned something new and were inspired to try out new things…  Very big well done to everyone involved there!

Nat Geo

If you have DSTV and you going to be home on Saturday night, National Geographic are airing a show called: “National Geographic’s Most Amazing Photos”. Its on this Saturday (16th) on Channel 260 at 8pm.

Dave Hill

I think Dave Hill is by far my favorite photographer out there… He has such an amazing and unique style. If you want to be inspired, go check out his portfolio… He also has a blog, and loads of very cool behind the scenes videos. In these behind the scenes videos, you will see just how much work goes into creating his images….

Photoshop Actions

Photoshop actions not only save you time by allowing you to record repeated actions, they are also a good way to prototype with some different ideas. Often running quickly through a set of different actions can allow you see some unexpected results which can lead to the beginning of your masterpiece… Check out this “Ultimate Collection” photoshop actions from PSDFan.

If you new to actions, there is no shortage of help on the net… Here’s a link to a video tutorial explaining how actions work. From there you can keep watching the hundreds of other videos available…

HDR

HDR… you other love it or you hate it… If you not quite sure and you would like to experiment with HDR, I found a very nice set of tutorials from ‘BlameTheMonkey‘. Its a set of 5 tutorials. (3 part “Intro to HDR photography” & 2 part “Handheld HDR Photography” tutorials).

Patience is a virtue, or so someone said. The long wait is over and the May 2011 gallery has been published.

There are some changes coming down the line which will hopefully:
1. Simplify the image upload process.
2. Allow for a quicker turnaround time following the completion of judging. (yay!)
3. Provide better protection of your images.

Other news.

Due to the overwhelming response and submissions received for the first, WCC Photoshop Post-Processing Challenge, the deadline has been extended to Wednesday 20th July at 23:59. The image submission count for this challenge currently sits at a magnanimous three entries. Come on, there have to be more budding image manipulators out there!

Don’t forget that the image upload cut-off for July’s images (Set Subject = Long Exposure) is “Monday, Monday!” (that’s this coming Monday 18th July 2011)
