The 2012 KZN Region PSSA Conference takes place at Dragon Peaks Mountain Resort in the Drakensberg from the 26th to the 28th October 2012. The conference is being organised and hosted by The Westville Camera Club on behalf of the PSSA KZN Region.

It would be great to have people from all the regional clubs attending in numbers and make this congress a memorable one. The organising committee are in the process of finalising exciting guest speakers and the aim is to leave the attendee both inspired and educated, whilst having fun meeting and interacting with many other people who share your passion for photography.

Do bring your camera gear along, as “free” time is being scheduled into the program to afford everyone the opportunity to go and capture some of the beautiful scenery which the ‘berg has to offer.

Please fill in and return the Booking Form to Andrew Climpson as soon as possible to avoid any disappointment regarding bookings. Please also take note of the “early bird” discounted pricing. Should you desire to “book” a specific cabin, etc. then please contact Andrew as a matter of urgency. Andrew will “reserve” your preferred accommodation for no more than 3 days in which time you will need to conclude payment in order to secure the accommodation.

Information pertaining to the KZN Inter-club competition and entry forms will follow shortly. The results of the KZN Inter-club will be announced live at the congress and all judging will be conducted by independent judges, not affiliated to any of the KZN Clubs.

Thanks, We are looking forward to seeing all of you at the congress

Kind Regards,

 Free photography course

Came across this video today and I enjoyed Karl Taylor’s teaching style. Did a bit of digging around and found that they offer a free photography course on their website. All you have to do is sign up here, and they will e-mail you links to 14 video and pdf lessons. Of course they sell a lot more videos on their site but there’s a lot of good stuff to get started on for free…

You can also check out their YouTube channel for many more short videos…

Speedlight Tutorials

On the Nikon USA website, I found 3 brilliant videos on shooting with Speedlights (Strobist Style). The videos are by David Tejada. He reminded me a lot of Joe McNally. Same style photos and techniques.

At the same time, take a look around the Nikon USA website. They have a learn and explore section which is packed with great resources.

Instagram in Photoshop

With all the buzz around Instagram lately, you might want to try recreate those filter looks on your computer… Take a look at this Photoshop plugin called Perfect Effects 3. They give you a good selection of filters for free. They also offer a couple of other free plugins worth taking a look at.

Hi all,

If you are a PSSA member, then please fill in and return this linked nomination form to Petro Bosman at petro.bosman@gmail.com. Thanks.

As announced on Wednesday evening, we will be retiring our image upload facility and embarking upon a new and exciting journey with Photo Vault Online.

Our old system has served us well, but not without hiccups. I have uploaded a simple 3-step tutorial into the tutorials page to help you with the following steps:

  1. Register a Login ID with Photo Vault Online.
  2. Upload images into Your Photo Vault.
  3. Enter the monthly WCC competition.

The Photo Vault Online tutorial is a PDF and can be read or downloaded from this page.

Even if you already have a Photo Vault Online Login ID, please take a few minutes to read about how to locate and submit images into the WCC monthly competition.

When you are ready, navigate to Photo Vault Online by clicking on the link below and register, login and begin uploading images. For any queries you may have, or should problems arise, then please post a message on the WCC facebook page. This way, many people can respond or read about issues which they too may be experiencing.

Click the image below to navigate to Photo Vault Online.

Save this link as a bookmark in your browser so that you can locate it easily the next time you need to upload images.

Trusting that Photo Vault Online will provide all members of the WCC with a better facility to handle the monthly image uploads.

Sharp Sharp!

Sharpness in photos is something that all photographers strive for. We hear it all the time during judging. Sharpness should be one of the most important things to get right “in camera” as its very hard (and mostly not possible) to achieve a sharp photo after pressing the shutter button. Its also not only about having the best lenses in the world. Check out this article for some great tips on how we can achieve sharp photos by improving our shooting techniques.

Babies…

Check out this list of links from digital-photography-school.com where they rounded up a whole lot of resources on how to go about shooting newborns…

Woohoo, it’s roadshow time again! Booking is essential, click the image below.

Hello WCC,

It is time for us to all get together again and have some fun socialising, learning and of course exercising our trigger finger.

We will be going to Tala Game Reserve on the 27th May 2012. Gates open at 06:30 and close at 18:00. We will all meet at the gate at 06:30 but please don’t feel pressured into being there early and if you running a little late you will still be allowed into the reserve.

Costs are as follows:

  • R60.00 per vehicle
  • R50.00 per person
  • R40.00 per child (3-12 Years)

We will have a braai at the picnic area at 12:00 for all those hungry togs and their families, fires will be provided but please bring all your own meat, salads, rolls etc. as well as chairs, tongs and anything else you might need.

After the braai you are free to enjoy an afternoon drive or head for the hills.

Please remember that Tala does not accept cash at the reserve and all transactions are done on either credit or debit cards.

Some Useful Tips

Check you have your memory cards and that they have been formatted and your batteries are fully charged.

When you are there take a few test shots, so that when you want to catch that perfect shot you are ready.

A bean bag is a great help when shooting out of your car, you open your window and rest it on the door, as long as the occupants don’t move around, this gives you a place to rest those long lenses of yours.

Please could you give us an idea as to numbers attending so that we may arrange charcoal etc. andrew.climpson@westvillecameraclub.co.za

Hope to see you all there.
Andrew
